The Sonoran Desert is unlike any landscape on earth. Ancient saguaros, crimson rock formations, and a sky that goes on forever — it’s a backdrop that demands to be explored, not just admired from a poolside lounger.

Scottsdale’s outdoor adventure scene has exploded in recent years, with outfitters offering everything from sunrise balloon rides to night-sky jeep tours. Here’s how to make the most of the desert that surrounds Elite Retreat.

Take to the Sky: Hot Air Balloon Rides

Sunrise Balloon Ride over the Sonoran Desert

There is no more spectacular way to see Scottsdale than from a hot air balloon at sunrise. As the desert floor glows gold and the saguaros stretch out in every direction, you'll understand why people call this place magical. Most operators launch from North Scottsdale and include a champagne toast after landing. A perfect activity for the first morning of your stay. Operators to look for: Hot Air Expeditions and Arizona Balloon Classic.

🌅 Best Time to Go

Balloon rides launch at sunrise — typically 5:30–6:00 AM depending on the season. The air is calm, the light is extraordinary, and temperatures are perfect. October through April is ideal. Summer rides are possible but the heat makes the experience significantly less comfortable.

Summit the Valley: Iconic Hikes

Camelback Mountain — Echo Canyon Trail

Strenuous · 2.5 miles round trip · Phoenix/Scottsdale Border
Scottsdale's most iconic hike and the one that separates the committed from the casual. The Echo Canyon trail is steep, rocky, and demanding — but the 360-degree views from the summit make every handhold worth it. The Cholla Trail on the eastern side is slightly less technical but equally rewarding. Go early to beat the crowds and the heat.

Tom's Thumb Trail — McDowell Sonoran Preserve

Moderate–Strenuous · 4.2 miles round trip · North Scottsdale
A local favorite that sees far fewer crowds than Camelback. The trail winds through pristine Sonoran Desert to a dramatic granite thumb formation with sweeping views of the entire valley. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is one of the largest urban preserves in the nation — and it's practically in Elite Retreat's backyard.

Lost Dog Wash Trail

Easy–Moderate · 4.6 miles · North Scottsdale
Perfect for groups with mixed fitness levels. This well-maintained trail through the McDowell Sonoran Preserve offers beautiful desert scenery without the technical challenge of Camelback. Wide enough for the group to walk and talk, and gorgeous in the early morning golden light.

Get Off the Beaten Path: Jeep & ATV Tours

Desert Storm Jeep Tours

Off-Road · Group Friendly · 2–4 Hours
One of Scottsdale's most popular adventure outfitters, Desert Storm runs guided jeep tours through terrain that's impossible to reach on foot. Guides share deep knowledge of desert ecology, geology, and Native American history. The sunset tours are particularly spectacular — the desert turns amber, pink, and violet as the sun drops behind the White Tank Mountains.

For groups who want to get behind the wheel themselves, ATV tours through the Tonto National Forest offer an exhilarating few hours in the desert. Side-by-side UTVs accommodate two per vehicle and are easy to operate for beginners. Groups of 10+ can book private tours for a fully customized desert run.

Water in the Desert: Saguaro Lake & Salt River

Salt River Tubing

Only in Arizona do you float a desert river surrounded by saguaro cacti and wild horses. Salt River Tubing is a beloved summer tradition — grab an inner tube, a cooler, and let the Salt River carry you 4 miles through one of the most unique landscapes in America.
